2015 recommendation for Garmin mount and other stuff
We just got a 2015 RX-350 from Carmax. It will be our only car. Replacing a 2022 Mazda CX-30 which was fine but too small to pull a trailer (small Lowes utility trailer with 4 x 6 bed size). The Lexus is one owner, no accident Carfax, 63,000 miles, documented 9 oil changes at the Lexus dealer over those miles. I've already mounted a 2" receiver hitch on the car to pull the trailer and I'm amazed how clean and un-rusted the underside is. Has it's expected scuffs, small nicks, and interior wear, but we're very satisfied. Carmax had to move the car from Omaha, NE to Louisville, KY for us to purchase it. Previously owned a 2018 RX-350 but just couldn't put up with the constantly shifting transmission.
Now my question. Does anyone have a slick way to mount a Garmin GPS in this. There is no OEM navigation, so a Garmin or phone is mandatory. I have a Garmin from an older car and it works fine but maybe not the best mounting location.
So why do I have to pull a trailer you may ask? To bring back home the spares for my also newly aquired Austin Healey 100-Six BN4. Should be having this car transported in a few weeks. Working with a broker and car hauler to get it from Indy to Louisville. Not too far, but far enough so driving it wasn't a prudent option. Especially this time of year. The spare parts include a transmission, 4 wire wheels, spare side curtains, spare OEM steering wheels in need of restoration, OEM front drum brakes, etc., so a trip up with a trailer was a requirement.
Perhaps a lot to put in one post, but what I'm really looking for a a slick way to mount a GPS in the Lexus.
Thanks for your input.
We have a Nav option in our 3RX but find the Apple phone map app more convenient to use with smaller screen less distracting and when taking the phone on holidays the Apple map app is accurate in various countries in Europe and Mexico for use in rental car. In the 3RX we have a charging attachment with magnetic phone holder that plugs into lower cigar lighter, clips on a middle vent, can run gps map all day when needed and keeps the phone handy for hands free calls. I think Lexus charges a $350 fee to update maps each time in their nav system and which needs to be updated often.
I have a TomTom GPS and mainly use it as a backup (since some remote places have back cell signal).
Yours seems to be bigger and not sure how old it is, some routes maybe outdated. I now use my phone instead (even cars with build in Nav, they are still troublesome to set location IMO)
If you do want to keep the GPS, put it in front of your non nav screen, that's what I would do. I am never a fan of putting anything on the dash.
My Garmin is 14 years old, cost $100 and came with free Lifetime updates. I update every year.
I use a clip holder on the center vent but my screen is smaller than the OPs Garmin so no help there.
The $1200 Lexus Navigation System was the biggest mistake I made when ordering this car.
I also tow a small Lowes trailer.
Towing 800 lbs I get 20mpg.
Same trip with no trailer is 25 mpg.
