2012 RX may need a new front caliper-what brand?
Hello,
A few years ago, when I started doing front brakes on my 2012, I discovered that one caliper was shot (one of the piston seized), and both had damaged piston boots. All boots had a slit on the inside, and I noted that OEM rotors were extremely rusty on the inside. My conclusion was that the pieces of rust were flying out of the rotors while driving and, eventually, destroyed the rubber piston boots.
So, I got aftermarket calipers from a local Advance parts. Besides becoming rusty within two weeks, the brakes worked fine. I was able to complete another two or three brake jobs without any problems.
When doing brakes, I usually open up the bleeder on the caliper before pushing the pistons in so the old fluid does not go back into the system.
However, last time (about a year ago), when I tried to open the Lt. front bleeder it broke off. I finished the job but had to push the fluid back.
The caliper/brakes work fine; I wonder if I should replace the caliper next time and if yes what brand to use?
I did like the fact that OEM calipers never rusted, but they cost too much IMO.
For those of you who did replace calipers, what brand did you use and are you satisfied?
Thanks

I chose the generic calipers since they are simple devices that only need a good seal and freely sliding pistons to work properly. No need to spend a lot of money on them unless upgrading in size. The key is to buy coated(painted) ones to prevent rusting.
My fronts I ordered. The painted calipers and coated rotors still look and performs good a year later. The whole set cost a fraction of what new Lexus calipers and rotors would cost.
