Hello,
I’m trying to diagnose an issue I’m having with my 3rx, I’ve come across people saying that there are “deeper” codes than the standard OBD codes. Does this hold any water? Do I need something other than an OBD tool to view codes? Are there other onboard computers to get codes from?
There are a few classes of codes OBD supports. The basic codes are P codes, dealing with most powertrain issues. If you have issues with other systems, such as SRS, ABS, or BCM components , you’ll need a code reader that has those capabilities. I think reading codes other than P codes is being referred to as “deeper”.
you’ll need a code reader that has those capabilities
ah that makes sense. So I don’t need to have a second tool or class of tool, just one that has been updated to contain codes from other sources from the car.
All codes from all modules from all components of the car will come from the OBS2 port then, right?
You can see all the cars sensors and error codes via the OBD2 port. You just have to decide how much you want to spend on the OBD diagnostic tool. You can see most all the code categories in a ~$100 reader or spend 700+ for a bidirectional scanner.
I have the iCarsoft TYT V1.0 OBDII scan tool, ordered on Amazon in September 2019 for $110. It reads various modules on my wife's 2015 RX350 including the engine, transmission, ABS, and SRS. Worth the money for any DIY guy in my opinion.
