Pcv hose replacement? Is it bad?
Hi everyone, about 1-2 years ago, i changed the pcv valve with a generic one. I also replaced the hose as the original seemed quite brittle.
the parts shop gave me 3/8 air brake hose. Is this the right size/material hose?
i looked at the hose today. As i moved the outter foam protector i noticed oil/soot coating on the inside of the foam. Also this air brake hose seemed a bit more swollen then when it was new. Is this normal?
thanks

Air brake hose wasn’t designed to come in contact with fuel/oil. An oil hose, fuel line hose or transmission oil cooler hose would hold up to it a lot better. I used 3/8” hose but the factory used 10mm. A little snug of a fit but perfectly fine.
Matrx. Thanks. Yes i picked up a fuel line and installed it. The air brake one was quite swollen, and someone had a layer of oil/soot inside the outter foam sleeve that covers this pcv hose. Strange. I wonder if this might be causing the cold morning vibration/drone on startup?
My Highlander used to be really bad and sooty before I changed the rear valve cover with updated design, did the PCV, full tune-up etc. No vibration or drone but man did it stink of oil and burn a ton. But a different engine. Some people attribute the variable intake runner valve system sticking for the drone to happen, but I haven’t looked into it too much yet.
I’m interested in this drone noise, did it still happen with the new hose? Funny story is when I was changing the PCV valve on a 2.5 L Camry (dumbest PCV valve location ever probably). I dropped it into an abyss and couldn’t get it out. After getting some permission and voicing my plan, I started the car and drove it down the road and swerved hard, shortly later the PCV shot out of the hole it was stuck in, and I was able to find it on the road and install it shortly after. There was a huge hollow/droney noise on start up which sounded like a huge vacuum leak. Similar to if you had the oil cap off with the engine running.

Mattrx, i haven't tried it after a cold night outside. Will park it tonight and try in the morning.
so for you, in the issue you we're having, it was the actual vvt solenoid?
i agree, i had a 2002 camry with the 2.4 engine. The vvt solenoid was at the back and getting the bolt on and off was a pita!

My Highlander had a bit of a vibration / drone when the lower passenger side engine mount went bad. It actually translated NVH into the cabin as if I had a really loud exhaust. It would be bad at certain RPMs too. I have since put an exhaust itself on the Highlander and it didn’t translate into the cabin so badly.
My VVT-i solenoids on my RX were super clogged and the filters were bad too. Got a new one for the rear and cleaned the front but didn’t notice a difference. The variable intake flap is on the intake itself on a beige piece of plastic on the passenger side. It’s a long shot but I’d try unplugging the connector and seeing if there is an improvement. This won’t throw / store a code thankfully.
