Default Driver Side Air Vent Not Opening Enough?

Compared to my passenger side vent, it seems the driver’s side vent isn’t opening as much. Is this normal or is something wrong? The reason I can’t tell is that my car came with both of these vents smashed, and I just recently replaced the passenger side one. Now I have the driver’s side w/ cupholder here outside of the car that I pulled from a wrecked RX. It has yet to be installed in my car

My God, these things are the most over-engineered, fragile, finicky pieces of crap I have ever seen. Every time I touch it or try to clean it more it feels and sounds like it’s going to break. I can see how both of mine were disintegrated when I got the car. I want to make sure it’s working properly before installing it because I already know the pain and suffering involved in taking this thing out of the car in one piece. It turns about 3 notches before stopping, and then a final click fully opens it. Any help or point of reference would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Hi MattRx.
I have no idea but I will look later.
Maybe I can see if I shine a light down in there.

I reposted your pic in my reply, if I understand this is the driver side?
If so yeah it looks like it's only opening 1/3rd of the way so I will compare to mine later today unless someone can do it and post up what they find.

Thank you! Yes, the driver’s side only opens about a 3rd of the way, while the passenger side fully opens. You can even feel that the pass side has more rotations before completely opening. The mechanisms on each side look the same and bottom out pretty similarly which was me confused

Hi Mattrx.

Yeah, something doesn't look right.
I shined a flashlight up in there and the vent by the passenger side window opens the same as the vent by the driver side window.

I checked several times comparing one side to the other because they look curved up in there and an optical illusion.
However looking straight into the vent, both sides open the flap all the way horizontal- as viewed from being installed and looking straight in- so not sure if it looks different removed from the car.

Thanks! I’m going to take the mechanism apart and see what’s up. I really appreciate it

Thanks again Margate330!! For future readers: The trick to fixing the adjustment is to remove the middle gear and set the other two at the correct limits before placing the middle gear back in. Now it’s opening and closing fully and smoothly again. You need to remove a tiny “access panel” to get to them.
