Default alternator

I have a whistling/whining sound coming from my rx. Went to have a lexus guru at my shop down the street check it out; and its been determined my alternator is slowly on its way out as the bearing that spins is on its way out. How long could this possibly last before I end up in trouble?

If you can put up with the noise, it can last a bit, I've drove for 2 months on a noisy alternator myself (not that I recommend this). But typically I find bearings and the brushings lasting about the same time as each other, and while the failing bearing can mean a working alternator, once the brushing wear out, you alternator will be useless.

But since you are aware of the issue, it's best to start acting on it now rather than wait and it leave you stranded.

Hi Matts,

Glad the noise got consistent enough for someone to diagnose it for you.
I bought a used oem alternator on ebay with minimal rust and corrosion for dirt cheap to keep on the shelf for a spare.
Many of the ones on ebay are rusty and spent but there are some that look good last time I checked so just an idea.

Cheers!

Get a remanufactured alternator, they are certified and warranted. Get it done now, risking a shut down while on the road is not an option because it happens when you least expect it. The costs on not preemptive replacement are always higher. Good luck.

I already did have it tested; and while its charging fine for now; yea i dont want to wait till it does go bust as i dont want to be stuck having to wait to be towed by aaa back to my indie shop. but as far as something major like a alternator; i wouldnt go reman. as i wouldnt trust it; its only new for me on something as major as that.

New alt is gonna to run you hundreds of dollars (800+ possibly) and I’ve never had any issues with the Denso reman alts. They’re reman’d in the US of A and are a high quality and affordable piece that should last for years to come. Don’t buy one from Lexus/Toyota because you’ll get a crappy “Remy” branded one that I got that failed within 2 years.

I’d get the 2007 Sienna alternator on Rockauto. The Sienna amp is 150 amps instead of 130 or 100, a higher number is recommended by Denso themselves to ensure longer alternator life. The Sienna uses the same belt pulley and case as the RX350 alternator so it’ll be a bolt-in upgrade.

Part no.

A Denso reman alternator still fetches a pretty penny, just got one for a Honda Odyssey and that cost 350. See if you can find a local small mom and pop rebuild shop, by me they're only 100-150 for a rebuilt minus core. I have put years on these, most lasting long enough for me to get rid of my car.

I havent had much time to devote to looking further into it by checking some other places for prices as i just started working again after a 7 month "hiatus"(so to speak) but maybe if i have a chance tomorrow I will call around to some places etc. I do know of one place that comes to mind that happens to be a vehicle electrical system only for vehicles type service place that ive driven by a million times so i might check with them tomorrow.

A certified remanufactured alternator is an option, same warranty given versus the OEM (tells you something). Or you can drop $$$ on an OEM.

Many years ago I got burned repeatedly with reman alternators and starters failing and being unreliable(junk) but it's nice to know that there are some quality remans available for our cars.

The cost of new is the reason I bough a used one from ebay for $50 for a spare in case I ever needed it and but I will consider remans again.
