Why does it seem lately like ive been getting crappy gas mileage? I mean i always use premium like yer supposed to. Ive been getting a average combined less than 20mpg. What gives?
Plugs, o2 senors, a/f? tire pressure? Less traffic possibly going faster then usually? btw according to the mpg gauge, I've been less then 20 mpg in traffic......
18 here in the city myself and I have the smaller 330 engine. I for sure know this engine isn't running at peak performance after running for 15 years.
Even my 2016 NX is only grabbing 21-23 city and thats a tiny 2.0L turbo.
I remember you saying that your engine is knocking and failing, and that you're just waiting for it to basically explode. If that is the case, it's probably related.

You said the combined fuel economy is now less than 20mpg, what were you averaging before the drop?

Yeah that's right.....If thats the case after a mechanic checked it, then swap out the motor. Kinda funny the OP is still driving it.

yea ur probably right. And yes it is knocking. I dont know know but this has sorta left a bad taste in my mouth so to speak as far as lexus reliability goes. Yea the knocking rods are probably causing bad mileage it sounds like.

yea that reason too is probably a culprit i would imagine. Any time a engine gets to be this old if in fact my engine is the original one (and I sorta questioned that before) then its 13 years old and its probably just getting tired etc.

no its not funny. And for now i dont have a choice but to drive it the way it is dude. I have no other vehicle to drive!. Ibe been looking elsewhere and i think sadly will stay away from the brand for a bit just because its sorta left a sour taste in my mouth. And also the engine swap option is out! too much money involved.
If in deed you had a mechanic check it out & it is the rods, as you know its a matter of time one or more ventilate the block. As far as the Toyota quality goes, this can happen to any machine as how the owner or PO took care of it & maintained it. The year really has nothing to do w/ it, basically mileage & if it was maintained. I've had a few motors that are over 40+ yrs old & on top of it the later engines like these have tighter tolerance then the early engines. Hopefully you find a replacement vehicle very soon.......

well yes I know this can happen to any vehicle no matter what it is; because yes it depends how previous owners maintained it and apparently I got one that originally i thought was pretty well taken care of until one by one things started happening. so i guess it wasnt as well maintained as i had thought.
You really should trade it in now while it has some value, before the engine completely grenades, and youll be stuck with a paperweight worth a few hundred bucks. I know you mentioned before you have a limited budget and are not too keen on working in your own car. With that being said, the money you get from the RX trade could cover a majority of a lease on a decent car, especially now with used cars going at a premium because of tax time.

Well yes I know Im on borrowed time so to speak and i need to move on trading it in before something major does happen and i cant get anything for it. As it stands now with the mileage it has on it and the cosmetic stuff on it like dings etc i think at the most i will be lucky to get 4000 out of it as the last place i went to only wanted to give 3500 for trade in value. Today Im going to go look at another highlander that could be a possible candidate.
