Default How to get service bulletins

Hey guys, I just found out a new way to get hold of service bulletins. It appears that back in 2012 a law was passed that required the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to place these kinds of things on their website. But they have not been doing that, probably at the "urging" of the auto manufacturers.

The Center for Auto Safety, an advocacy group, filed a lawsuit against NHTSA in 2016 to get them to comply and finally the NHTSA has done so.

To get the info, you have to follow a slightly (I use the word cynically) convoluted process to find where they buried the info.

First, go to https://www.nhtsa.gov/search?keywords=Recalls
In the blue bar at the top of the screen, click on the word RECALLS.

Now click on the word VEHICLE in the blue bar. Down below that in a box enter your car info, i.e., 2007 lexus rx350 (capital letters are not necessary) and click on the magnifying glass icon.

Scroll down a little bit and you will see a line that starts with your car description that you typed in.

At the end of the line, click on the number that appears under the label Manufacturer Communications.

Scroll down a bit more than half way and you will see
(numbr) Manufacturer Communications for (your car).
Below that are a bunch of categories that the service bulletins have been grouped in. Click on a category and the "manufacturer communications" for that category will appear. The titles of the documents may or may not tell you what it is. You will have to click on the title to see more information.

Below the paragraph that summarizes the item you clicked on, there may (or may not) be a line that says Associated Document.

If there is, click on this to finally see the service bulletin, or other whatever. It will be a pdf file that you can download.

Things to note:

Service bulletins can be listed more than once.

Not everything is a service bulletin. It could be directions to the dealer on how to do the paperwork or, as I read on one document, don't actively market this information to the customers or you won't get paid.

I don't know if anyone car figure out a more streamlined process, but if you do, please share it.
