Driver's Side Door Sensor
Had my RX in the shop having some body work to the left fender, suspension and driver's door. I got it back and was having some strange issues. The works was done in Pittsburgh - and I live in Cleveland - so I was reluctant to bring it back to them before I was sure what the issue was. One of the problems was the "auto" switch for the lights was not working and I killed my battery twice before realizing it was not working. The other issue was the courtesy lights did not go on when I opened the driver's door - but it did go on for the other doors. This was the problems that made me look at the door sensor. After taking the switch off I realized it was disconnected. After connecting it the overhead lights started working but for some reason the switch was not being depressed enough when the door was closed. I ultimately had to build up the door where it met the switch. For some reason the door was dented right where it met the switch. I found a rubber piece about 2mm thick and connected it to the door with two sided tape. Everything is working fine - and even the "auto" switch!
What you discovered with the door switch is unfortunately a common "trick" that repair places will use. To have repaired the door and align it properly required more work than they wanted to do. Usually this is when they underestimated the scope of the repair to begin with. Going back to the body shop and fighting with them could be a major headache. Even then, they would probably just slap a thick layer of Bondo on the door rather than do it the right way.
