Hi

First off, thanks everyone for this incredible community. Short time lurker (new lexus owner), but very very glad this is all here

I just finished replacing the ignition coil on the #1 cylinder (sheesh! what a job) and also did the spark plugs for the other rear cylinders. During reassembly, I wiped out the throttle body with a clean cloth. Once reassembled, the car would die after starting.

I pulled the codes with a bluetooth obd2 thing and they all pointed to issues with throttle position. I went back and looked over everything and realized the cpu connection to the throttle body wasn't connected. Reconnected it but the car would still die after starting.

I tried disconnecting the battery to reset everything, no luck.

Here's a video of the car starting and dying, and then me revving it before dying. Afterwards, the area smells strongly of exhaust.

Any thoughts? My feeling is that the problem is somewhere with the throttle body/air aspect of the engine, and not the spark. But I really have nothing to back that up except for the obd codes I pulled after doing the work. BTW, the car did have ignition misfire codes before the work and none after.


Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

Have you tried to pull some codes without completely starting the engine, on accessory only?
Verify for vacuum leaks?

I actually cleared the codes using my bluetooth obd2 device. I read something about a bad throttle position sensor reading leading the car to put itself into a safe mode so, once I reattached the throttle body sensor cable I cleared the codes thinking that the car might still be in a safe mode. Since then, it hasn't thrown any more codes but the check engine light is still on.

I've re-checked all the vacuum lines I remember touching....is there a good way to check for vacuum leaks?

First, I commend you for taking that DIY task....
Do you reconnect all properly?, since this wasn't an issue before. Always good to label the connections when taking apart.
A smoke test will solve any leaks, not connected correctly is another issue.
Here's a video for your task, you can always stop the video to check the connections:

RX330 or later models' throttle body is DBW and TB may need be adjusted by Techstream.

DBW = Drive by Wire?

I did mess with the throttle body positioning in the process of cleaning it out. Sounds like its possible to messed up its calibration.

Yes, as per video shows it seems ignition and start fine, more like choke and stall with no air when idle.
