Default Downgrade from NAV to non-NAV???

Crazy question I know, but we are purchasing a used 2005 rx330 for our daughter. NAV is functional, but these systems are old and she uses her phone for everything. Is it possible to remove the unit and plug in a standard climate control? I will retain the factory unit to replace if we sell it later on, but it seems like future stereo upgrades and life in general is more simple without the NAV unit. I am sorry if this has been covered, but I have searched for a few hours on google and could not find an answer about the RX.

I admit I am generally a lurker on boards and can find this type of information, but it seems that I have hit a wall here.

Thanks in advance.

If the beatsonic adapter is the best way to go, I can go that way when the time comes, but it seems that the factory NAV is not that great compared to todays options. Two LCD screens look a little goofy to me as well.

Thanks again in advance.

I'd go with a more basic radio unit below and keep your upper Nav screen for the other vehicle information. Setup menu, maintenance, etc.

Our NAV unit has a radio that has had some very rare moments where the radio turns off. A simple tap on the lower left bottom bezel of radio, and it comes back on. Happens maybe twice a month. If I am going to replace, I would NOT put in a second screen type stereo, but something that will fill the space. I think Alpine has a decent looking one.

GROM will be releasing their VLINE unit soon, which allows you to get an android system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support on your OEM navigation screen. I would suggest giving that a go once users provide their feedback on how well it works. I have placed a pre-order for that, so will share some feedback once I receive it and have some time using it.

Well, I don't know whether you can remove the navi screen but you definitely can remove the stereo head unit but keep the AC controls working using the Metra kit which is cheaper than beatsonic. Needs a bit of work because you have to plug a resistor to the cable from the Nav to the current head unit to trick the Nav into thinking the current head unit is still in place.

I think beatsonic lets you use the same stock amplifier which is not at all good (well my opinion is that)
The metra lets you use an aftermarket amp. but metra should have the plug in that lets you use the stock amp.
Do take a look on the Metra site if you are in to DIY.

Thats what I have done. I have ac controls plus the factory Nav (without sound of course). The new setup gives me bluetooth phone connectivity, USB. I can even like or dislike posts on facebook through the stereo - still scratching my head about that. Who the hell wants such a useless feature?

Interesting. I would be surprised if the OP's gen 4 NAV would work with this. I assume you have gen 5? I, like OP, have gen 4 which is just a backup camera screen to us.

Ahh, I didn't catch that he has a RX330, thought he had a 350. That's correct, it won't work with 4th gen.

My ES350 is gen 5, and is said to be compatible. It seems that only gen 5 is compatible based on the list here: http://gromaudio.com/store/vline/grom-vl1-lex5.html

GROM Vline will be compatible with Gen 4 and 6, in fact we are beta-testing Gen 4 now. Stay tuned!

So I get I am raising this thread from the dead but going back to the OP's question: can you plug in a non-nav climate control into the nav spot? I am about to pick up a 330 and don't want to deal with the finicky nav-unit

It doesn't work. The wiring is 100% different. I ended up keeping the nav unit and adding a 2nd screen

Hi friends, I did a Nav delete on my RX330 and posted a walkru for everyone.
Also, there were some minor wiring differences from 2005 and on but the process is similar.
I wouldn't mind helping if someone wants to try it for a newer year but only if they are a regular contributing member on CL and promise to share their work for everyone else. It's a LOT of work to dig thru the schematics and I'm not helping anyone anymore that doesn't want to share their work for others.
