Rack and pinion/ power steering pump leak
I just purchased an 07 RX 350 in Spring of this year. I've only put about 3500 miles on the thing, and just brought it to my mechanic for a 90k service. He noticed a power steering leak, put dye in and it turns out there's a small leak in the power steering pump, and a significant one in the rack and pinion.
Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue, and roughly how much I may be looking at for a repair. He said it's not leaking profusely, but it could go out at any time (said it's a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 as far as how aggressive the leak is). I'm making a trip down to Branson from Minneapolis during christmast week, I would imagine I need to get it done before then, but being the holiday season, money is a little tighter than usual.

I just had my R & P done last month, coincidentally at the same time the oil cooler line went out ( 2008 w/ 97000 mi). R & P cost $1330 and the oil cooler line was an extended warranty item sent out in a letter from Corp and fixed at no charge at dealer. My R & P was noted at a leak state back in 2013 and progressively got worse. Only symptom was small drops at the front passenger side on the floor that became a larger spot. I guess I would play it safe and get it repaired. Dealer had given me a $1600 bid and the independent was $1330.
Good luck!

This is the first I've heard of a pump leaking. The rack leak is common, had mine replaced under warranty a couple years ago.

Got an estimate back
I got quoted somewhere around 1300 (I go to an independent mechanic), for rack, pinion, and they recommended doing tire rod ends while we were at it (included in the quote). So, looks like a fair price at least. I don't want to chance a drive like that, so I'm getting it taken care of. Any other typical major mechanical issues near my mileage? (90k)

Have 2004 rx330-had to have rack & pinion repaired & replaced water pump last fall-was just under $4k from Lexus dealership. Original owner & had under 40k mi. on car. Live in Houston tx & dealership explained r&p problem caused by roads! Reading this obviously taken for ride-should have read this forum. Now has 40,260 & may sell. Appears more problems around 50k mi.

I know this is a bump, but is there anyway to help prevent this leak? For example, I change the fluid about every 6 months (via the reservoir only) to keep the fluid fresh. By keeping the fluid clean, will that lessen the chance of a leak occurring? It also seems to happen mainly on older RXs, but has anyone with a 2008 experienced the issue? I'm assuming its the same rack, but figured i'd ask.
