Default Whining on acceleration?

Hi, hoping someone can help. Myself and girlfriend have 400h. Hers has recently developed a whining when acceleration and reduces when not. Car done 122k. Any idea what this could be? Thankyou, Chris

With the car in park, rev the engine... if you hear the whining noise then it's probably belt/pulley related. If you don't hear any whine while in park, then it's transmission/axle related.

Do a test and report back.

Have a feeling could be transmission. Is it an expensive fix?

Yes. I would start with a drain and fill and see if anything changes.
