Outside of the do it yourself projects, what $/hour are you guys paying for installs. I.e Alarms, subs, nav bypass/ dvd bypass etc? I know some will do each of these projects themselves but humor me with estimates that you have received and why you chose to go with a particular company. Thanks in advance

 

i just moved from Alberta where the labour rate was 100-120 per hour. here in Quebec, i have seen 50.

Thanks, I was being quoted $95 an hour here in Boston which seemed a little steep but the reviews and comments were that they do a great job.

 

that sounds about right for a city. you might get a better deal if you check out smaller cities.

just make sure they solder connections, and stay away from "crimp" type connections.

All I would say is stay away from Car Toys, Best Buy, etc.

 

Labor rates all range from $50 to $100 per hour. Please note that you will get what you paid for. Read the reviews and make sure the customer service representatives at the shop treats you in a professional manner. Also take a glance at the shop to make sure they are neatly organized and clean. If the shop is clean and organized, you can expect a clean and organized install.

Just a data pt:

Got an '04 Corolla CE for winter beater. Power locks, but NO keyless entry. Local co. (Century 2000/Akron) offered an Audiovox remote start for $125. Upgrading to the keyless entry was another $25 with two remotes. BUT.....this didn't include hooking up the RPM sensor, so when it was -9*F this winter, car cranked without starting. Shop would have changed to one of the other 4 crank times, but this car needs an upgraded intake manifold gasket that does NOT leak in real cold temps.

Oh, yeah, shop would also remove remote starter and also offered lifetime remote control batty changes...BUT if I wanted the remote start re-installed, they would get another $100.

So I locked in an appointment and got two quotes. One for $85 and another for $95. If I purchase the equipment through the shop then it will cost me $85/hour and if I bring my own it will be $95/hour. The reviews were consistent and they are relatively local. I will follow up with everyone once it's complete for the results.

I had a great experience with Car Toys on my Kenwood 6960 install here in Dallas so a blanket statement to avoid them is irresponsible in my view. Check your local store on Yelp or similar local review site on any company you are considering.

 

I have been working on cars as a installer for 16 years. I would stay away from Yelp or any other company that let people give reviews. Yelp is a scam. They are always asking for money so they can filter out the bad reviews and let the good reviews be seen. Yelp is ruining many local businesses that dont want to pay them. I dont know how they are considered a reputable company. Don't be lead by the price only. For $80 i would expect all connections soldered. I always solder all my wires and connections. Stay away from stereo shops that use 'T-taps' or White Crimp caps for their method of making connections. Make sure black split loom is used, zip ties, fuse holders and that everything is properly mounted. You also want the installer to have years of experience. You want a professional working on your car, not a Rookie. Always check your installation yourself after the job is done. This is my recommendation.
