(oops - fixed it)

Has anyone tried 225/60r18 rather than the 235/55r18's from the factory?

They are a 1/2" narrower and 1/2" taller. That alone, should provide a smoother
and quieter ride. PLUS they are cheaper!

What do you guys think?

Wouldn't a 235/65 be taller than a 225/60?

 

Your speedo would be 4.7% too fast....so if you think you are going 65mph, you are really going 61.97.

 

226/60 =28.6" - 235/55 = 28.1"

other way around... speedo would be slower.

 

The initial post said the factory tire was 235/65/18 and wanted to go to 225/60/18.

235/65/18 (diameter 30.03) -> 225/60/18 (diameter 28.63) that with the speedo at 65, the RX would actually be going 61.97.

What am I missing?

 

That the actual OE tire size is 235/55-18. Starting with the wrong premise and facts and it goes down hill from there.

 

Thanks for clearing that up ... for the record, I still stand by my statement that with the provided info, the speedo would be off (65->~62)...:-)

 

Can always run a couple psi per tire if you want a smoother ride. Be careful choosing a different tire size not only mess with your car's speedometer but also its intended look. For me the suspension and 36 psi in the tires get me a firm enough ride that is comfortable and still provides some feel from the road.

 

Oops, sorry guys... i fixed it.... 235/55 is a smaller diameter than a 225/60 and will display a slower speed than
you are actually traveling.

REGARDLESS, The 1/2" will not make that much of a difference.

I am more worried about the tranny shift points and traction control functions , and wondering
if anyone has tried it. And if so... was it trouble free?

I went from a factory 31.5" to a 35" on my Jeep and the difference was only 5 mph compared to the GPS.

 

I just got my 2004 RX330. I was expecting it to have 17" wheels as it didn't have the performance package. I'm considering going to a 17" wheel for a bit more rubber between the wheel and the road. I'm more interested in comfortable ride than performance in this vehicle. 225/65/17 should be a bit more comfortable than a 235/55/18. Not that I have any real complaints with the way it feels on the 235/55s though. Has anyone done this and realized a noticeable improvement in ride quality?

 

I agree man... for a luxury SUV/CUV (whatever it is) the ride is not very luxurious.

Dont get me wrong I love the car and dont regret my decision.

I am getting older and could give two ****s how wide my tires are, or how cool they look.

Anything will be an improvement, because my crappy Bridgestone's are almost done.

Which Bridgestone tires are you running? I have had the Bridgestone Alenzas on my vehicle now for quite some time, replaced the original OE Michelins with them, and have been quite happy with them over the years in my many travels.

I bought it certified with 50k (lease turn in). Tires were new, previous owner or Lexus,
put them on.

They melted in 30K.

 

Those are definitely not a set I would have purchased and there are several Bridgestone tires I would easily put ahead of this. According to Tire Rack they have a tread wear rating of only 300, thus your inability to get more than 30K out of them. Aren't these tires run flats? If so, that might explain some of the reasons you hate them so much.
