Default Replacing OEM tires

2009 RX with 18" Michelin tires. Only 38k miles on it, but need new tires already, which doesn't make me happy!!! I am a female that doesn't have a clue about tires, so please give me suggestions on the most economical, yet satisfying way to go. I live in FL, so don't need all terrain. Thanks so much for any advise!!!

there are a million threads on here about it, so i would look through the threads as well,

but i think you will find that most people lean towards the Bridgestone Alenza, i have them, they work great, and are "affordable"

bridgestone also recently released another tire named the Ecopia, it has less rolling resistance for better fuel mileage.

i also highly recommend going to Tirerack.com, they have customer reviews, and they do there own independent tests on tires as well.

Welcome to Club Lexus.

That is about right for the Michelin tires. Think I got 40K out of mine with my 2004.

As mentioned, there are plenty of threads on the topic of tires here. You could spend hours reading. Please attempt to read at least some of the more recent.

TireRack is a great source for reviews, information and base pricing. You do not need to buy from them, however, they are a sponsor for Club Lexus so we hope you will consider purchasing from them.

I have the Alenzas with about 47K miles on them and with plenty of tire left. Others have complained about them being noisy on the highway. The Ecopia is new and worth a look. There are plenty of Bridgestone/Firestone shops in the area.

While the OEM Goodyear tire was junk, the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring has received good reviews here. Plenty of Goodyear shops around.

There are other Michelins with better tread life, such as the Latitude, however, they are a bit more expensive. There are plenty of others, however, jury is out on some.

Other places to go for tires in FL include Costco, Sam's Club and Discount Tire. Be sure to get a few quotes as it is not just the cost of the tire but also the mounting and balancing. Be sure to check with the dealership as well. May sound weird, but some do have good pricing. Only costs your time to call and ask.

Thank you for the input. I did read through past threads, but many were dated, so wanted some 2012 input. I appreciate the assistance.

Same here, I bought them last summer: cheap, I'm very satisfied. I got Nokian's for winter: best winter tires I've owned!

Try Wal-Mart or Sam's for pricing. Make sure to get the warranty as they will repair what ever you buy at any Wal-Mart or Sam's. That is a requirement for my wife while I spend alot of time away from home. They sell the best Goodyear and Michelins at a fair price.

Well 10k on the Yokohamas Paradas, so far good, no uneven wear whatsoever.

Welcome Sue,

I've owned the Bridgestone Alenzas for a few years. I have just over 50,000 miles on them and they measure 7/32nds. of tread left. They started out life with 12/32nds. That equates to 1/32nd of wear for every 10,000 miles in my case.

For safety, tires should be replaced when they are down to 2-4/32nds remaining so I think I have a good 30,000 miles left on them. These tires may deliver 80,000 miles for me. I do 90% highway driving and check my tire inflation at least monthly.

All that said, if I were to purchase a new set of tires today I think it would be the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season. Here is why. They have a higher load rating, better handling in all conditions, a good tread life rating, and they are a low rolling resistance tire. In most cases lower rolling resistance translates to less tread depth but not in this tire. Less tread depth often results in poorer wet and snow handling and less miles per tire before they wear out.

IMO,the top three tire choices for the RX are;
Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season.
Goodyear Assurance ComforTred Touring,
Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza.

You would do well with any of these.

I put a set of the Goodyear Comfort Tred Assurance Touring on my 06 RX330 last fall. I have about 11,000 on them right now (rotate with every oil change). Seem to handle well and wearing well. Just put a set of Cooper CS4 Touring tires on my wife's 2010 RAV4. We'll see how they perform. Similar tread design and mileage.

Welcome to CL. I vouch for the Bridgestone Alenza Ecopia's. Green, quiet and rated for 50K miles. Best price with Costco with $60 coupon. Have put in less than 5K and loving it.

BTW, how did you know you need new tires?

Just curious what is the tread warrant on the OEM tires. If the warranty is more than your current miles start a warranty claim- be prepared to show tire rotations, alignment and mileage proof to back up your claims.
I have done claims with Goodyear, its painful initially as they want you to go away but its nice to see new tires on your RX when everything is said and done
