surprised warranty wont cover that, convertors are usually 8 years....
since you are in the most restrictive state / place for emissions, you might have to leave the state to get an aftermarket convertor. also, when you return and do an emission test, you will probably fail it.
maybe try some other dealers in and out of state, you might find a better price.
oh yeah, if they were plugged, you wouldnt be able to drive it.
well if you have a clogged convertor then you would have notice that your car is very slow on pick up-especially up a hill. that a good indication of it.
as far as the convertor goes -you may have to find them on a wrecker yard. I forgot what the letter code is for california state in the vin code number. You might get lucky and find one outside of california.
It's going to be expensive to replace if it actually is the converter, because in the state of Cali they are strict on emissions. As others have said when the converter is really clogged then the car will run terrible, it won't take speed, won't have enough power, etc.
Not sure about California laws for emissions, but here is my two-cents. When I decided to modify my exhaust system the Lexus cats had to go as they were not up to the task of my dual exhaust. Instead I had MagnaFlow cats put on.
When I had to get my emission test done, it past with flying colours.
I also have a '01 toyota RAV4 the cat went on it this year. The toyota part was $1300, once again I had a MagnaFlow cat put on. And the RAV4 passed the emission tests with flying colours.
Of note MagnaFlow cats have a 5 year warranty. I would consider checking MagnaFlow's web site and see if that is a viable option.
