Angry Crack in My Windshield - Again

I took a stone to the windshield yesterday. It is in the center about 2 inches off the bottom & the size of a 50 cent coin.
Took it in today & had it repaired. They did a great job but it isn't perfect of course. Thankfully it isn't in my sight line so u have to look down to see it.

Question is: $1850 to put in a LEXUS windshield & $500 for a aftermarket.

What have you done? Lexus or aftermarket? WHY?

Oh yes, the repair - $50.

We had a Lexus windshield put in as a replacement. The car is leased and I'm a paranoid person, so I don't want any unpleasantness when I return the car. Insurance covered it and I was shocked to see that Safelite billed our insurance company $1550 for it.

I'm sure there is absolutely nothing wrong with the aftermarket units though.

P.S. Geico will have Safelite repair nicks smaller than a dollar in length for free.

I live in Colorado where they sand the roads with small stones all winter. It is common to crack your windshield here ever other year or so, and even if it isn't cracked it will be so pitted up that you will need to replace it.
I have a $100 deductible for glass on my insurance and never pay much attention to what it costs or what they use. As long as it seals up and everything is as it should be I don't care.

Most insurance companies will pay for repair with no questions asked. Call and see if you can get your $50 reimbursed.

As to OEM vs. After-Market Glass (AMG) replacement, here is some reading material.

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...26/139493.html
http://www.glasslinks.com/newsinfo/detsafe.htm
http://www.glassdoctor.com/news/docs...s_05_06_09.pdf

http://www.ripoffreport.com/Car-Part...rs-r-ebw3y.htm

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls4...gone-wild.html

The crux of this reading is that most people think of the windshield as just something to keep the bugs and rain from hitting them in the face. In reality, the glass is a integral part of the safety metrics of the vehicle. Not only the glass itself but the installation is also critical to maintaining the safety of the vehicle.

AMG glass is not used in new vehicles for a reason. Clearly, if the auto manufacturer could safely save over a grand per vehicle by using AMG they would. You need to ask yourself why is it that they don't. AMG does not meet the same Federal Safety standards as OEM glass. For that same reason, if you replace the windshield in a leased vehicle with AMG, they will charge you a replacement fee at turn-in time.

My first choice would be for the repair. If a repair is not possible, I would opt for OEM glass and I'd also check out the firm doing the replacement. In the event of an accident, I want my family and myself as safe as possible.

I have auto glass added on my mid century insurance ( farmer's parent company ) it's $100 deductible and I opted $30 per year for OE replacement, regardless I can Lexus rain sensing windshield for $100 deductible and insurance covers the rest. I also crack smaller than a dime repaired before, it was ok, you almost can't the spot but since I took it in for repair, I can still barely see the small spot. It's not an eye sore but still should have spend the $100 to get new windshield

I would re-phrase it to "Clearly, if the auto manufacturer could safely OVERCHARGE over a grand per vehicle by using AMG they would".... ...and that's exactly what they do.

Try buying anything with a word LEXUS on it, I mean, anything: antifreeze, oil, spark plug, key chain, umbrella, or a bottle of water. Same goes for windshields.

I've replaced mine twice now on the RX. Both times using aftermarket, but PPG (which manufactures the windshield for Canadian built models from what I recall. No issues and looks great both times for less than half the dealer price.

I just replaced my GS windshield last week with aftermarket as well...all the freeway construction for the past couple years on my daily commute is a pain for rocks/cracks.
