Question rx shift mode?

no one can give me a straight answer. what is the correct shift mode for around town driving (under 45mph)? i've been told to leave it in "D" for all driving. logic would say that it should be in "4" for around town and "D" for freeway driving. anybody know what's best?? dave

you wont believe how many people dont understand the lexus shiftable "shift".

there is no "best".

if you leave it in D, the gears will change automatically from 1-5

if you leave it on 4, the gears will change automatically still 4 and never reach 5 even if it wants to to save gas

therefore, logic would have it that you keep it on D. Even though the older logic is that the fifth gear is the overdrive gear, its not really only used on the highway. if your going around 40, then the car might as well go into the fifth gear to lower the rpms and give you better gas mileage.

so in short, keep it in D and switch it to 4 when you need to overtake on the highway

There is no shift mode, its an automatic not a stick shift. Juest leave it in D and let the computer shift for you. You should not need to use 4 at all, unless you are towing or something.

under 45mph not towing

if your a driver who always seem to be in a rush than leave in 3 or 4.

pro: pick up speed without the automatic gear shift lag. you also slow down faster because of engine braking, thus less brake wear.

con: waste more gas because your constantly in higher rpm. wear down engine components quicker and may eat some oil due to higher temps.

if your a patient driver leave it in D .
pro: save gas
con:nothing
