Default Aftermarket RES

Hi

Anyone have an aftermarket rear entertainment system install in their car?

Brand?
Cost?

Thanks

Probably not as simple as you are looking for, but I had installed two 7" touch screen Alpine monitors in the headrest of my RX330. Up front I had an Alpine 7" DVD monitor head unit, and I also had an Alpine DVD changer and PS2 game console. You could route any video source to any monitor independently at any given time. The reason why I like individual headrest monitors instead of the single roof mounted monitors is because each passenger can watch their own screen and also watch their own video source.

I have the invision dual headrest monitor setup - got it put in as part of the deal - they claim some BS like 2700 for it, 2300 is cost, but I have seen them for more like 17-1800 new on the internet. Had the same thing in my GX - isn't perfect but works well - both monitors have dvd players and inputs for game systems and USB for ipod etc - either monitor can watch what is playing on either dvd and it has wireless headsets - it uses an fm modulator which works ok, but only the A monitor can play through the FM modulator which is a pain. It would be nice if either source could come through the modulator, so I am going to hook it up to my vaistech unit that has an aux input so it plays direct into the system and I can then choose which monitor outputs to the radio.

Here are a couple of pics. Personally, I would go with a double DIN vs a flip out monitor, but unfortunately in Alpine's case they did not have a double DIN at the time, and still today their double DIN doesn't control the option Alpine A/V expansion unit. This unit called the VPE-S431 allows for extra A/V inputs, and allows for full touch control from any of the 3 touch monitors. Kind of like a Home Audio command center. Anyway, don't mind the slightly loose headrest fitting around the monitor. I was still working on the installation and eventually got a better fit. If you use the trim ring for the monitor it hides a lot of that and it a breeze to install, but I prefer the more custom looking non trim look.

Here is the exact same Alpine monitors now installed in headrests for my BMW 330i. These headrests had precut holes already which was a little too large for a trimless install, so I had to use the trim face. It looks a lot more prefab. Looks nice, but less custom IMHO.

You have to buy the OEM part for the Japanese Harrier. If you didn't know, the Harrier is the RX in Japan. They have an optional radio trim plate that we don't get. Since it is an OEM part, it fits perfect and the color of the trim is prefect. I bought mine very early on so I had to have someone in Japan get it for me. I believe now places like Carson Toyota might stock and sell it though. Sometimes you can find it on ebay as well.
