What viscosity does everyone use? I know different climates affect which grade of oil is used, so be sure to note where you live and drive.

Keep in mind that SAE oil weight is a range and viscosity at startup is equally important as the oil thickness at operating temperature.

For example, I use Castrol Synthec 0w-30 for SoCal summer because it is almost a light 40 weight at operating temperature, higher viscosity than most 5w-30. Yet at startup, it flows a lot better to lubricate critical engine parts quicker than 5w-30.

During winter, I use Mobil 1 0w-20, SL rated. Used 20 weight for over 30K miles and send an Used Oil Analysis sample to the lab and engine has far less wear than Mobil 1 5w-30. Also according to multiple UOAs from various xmz-fe owners, dino 5w-30 oil is sheared to a 20 weight oil in less than 200 miles after a fresh oil change. Folks have been driving around with 20 weight oil for years, they just don't know it.

I use 5W-30 Motul 300V.

 

I'm located in Indonesia where the weather is always in the 70's and 80's all the times all the years . I use Mobil 1 supersyn 5W30 for my Harrier 240G

 

The second generation is better as far as engine cooling compared to the 1st gen 3.0 RXs/Harriers. However, I have used Mobil 1 15W50 and 0W40 in the past, the latter of which is the favorite of Mobil 1 oils I have tried.

I recently gave Liqui Moly (sometimes called Lubro Moly) depending on location a try in its 5W30 (the 5W40 is way thick, like a 50), but although it was better than Mobil 1 5W30, as soon as I recently found some green (rather than gold) German Castrol 0W30 at a BMW dealer here, I switched back, as earlier the product had been pulled from the market.

Now as our colleague in Australia mentioned, he uses Motul 300V. In the Western Hemipshere, Motul is better known for its excellent brake fluid and motorcycle oils, but make no mistake it is an excellent oil. They also make a 0W20 grade. 5W30 for vehicles under 100k
10W30 for vehicles over 100k

If you're in CA, where it is warm all year around, you can stay with 10W30 which should be a very good viscosity for your RX.

 

I see that some of you guys are using synthetic. That's not what the engine requires, right? I've been using only regular every 5k miles.

 

Doesnt require Synthetice but they are better!

 

5W-30 Dino and soon switching to Syn, 2k miles to go!

 

Amsoil 5w30.

 

I plan on using regular 5w-30, will probably go with Castrol.

 

Try this... let's just say that I'll stick to this one for quite some time!
