I bring in my wife's car in at 5800 mile. We did baby the car during the first 2,000 miles (it's tough without a tach meter for reference), and most of our drivings are long-distance interstates (our interstates are a lot different than the I-10, I-105, I-5, I-110 there in LA )

However, I didn't plan on keeping this car for more than 6 years. If I decided to do so, I probably will have the oil changed every 3000 miles with regular engine oil, just to be safe. The oil capacity in this V6 is smaller compare to other 6-cyliner engines and European cars. I will bring in some Mobil 1 synthetic at the next service (15,000 miles).

Default 5K Oil Change Intervals

If you check your owners manual you will notice that all maintence is set at 5K intervals. According to the people at Lexus of Wayzata (MN) it is really what you should stick to. You can do it more often if you like and even at a longer interval (say 7K) but the schedule is set up with other things to do besides just change the oil. One big thing is the tire rotation. Most tire shops and manufacturers will recommend rotating the tires every 5000 miles to get better tire wear and longer life out of them. To me if Lexus has no problem with going 5000 miles between changes then I have no problem with it. My previous Lexus was a 98 GS300 and I did do the changes on that every 3000 miles but it was done at local garages that charge around $20. for a regular oil change. My nearest Lexus dealer is 300 miles away, so my 5000 mile change was there (it was free) and we wanted to go to Minneapolis anyway. I'm now at the 10,000 mile point so will go to a local Toyota dealer and have them do it. But I want them to do exactly what the maintence schedule states including the 5 tire rotation (many places only do a 4 tire rotation and the spare never leaves the mount). Anyway, what ever milage you decide to do it at, just remember to have the other things done some time or other and rotate the tires.
