sun/moon roof
Trending Topics
The model being crash-tested on page 10 of the e-brochure has the multi-panel moonroof, although it's not a very good picture. You really can't tell what it would look like with the roof open.

This picture from the owners manual might give you an idea of how it works:

Lil4X is correct about it being mainly offered in California. They actually got some for stock in California in 2003; everywhere else it was a special-order only. Lexus of Naperville (Illinois) actually got one "by accident" in May 2003, so I got to see it in person! Pretty cool option, although I agree that it would be pretty warm inside in the summer. There is a sunshade for it just like the normal moonroof, but that would sort of defeat the purpose.
The reason it disappeared was that the roof panels vibrated and made noise at higher speeds, although that rattling noise finally got fixed in October 2003 with a redesign of the tracks that hold the roof in. With all of that glass, I'm sure that there is some element of road or wind noise to contend with, and maybe that's what KenLex 41 is referring to.
The roof is structurally sound, and it doesn't take away from crash test results, so it's not a safety problem.

Damn. That really sucks. I liked that option. Hopefully they switch to a One Piece Panorama roof like the one on the Caddy SRX. A great majority of those cars are sold with that option as there is no regular moonroof option.

But you're right - it's not actually gone. It can still be ordered.
