RX400h Drive Training
I just got back from a Lexus Sales Consultant driver training program on the RX400h and the new GS vs. its key competitors. (I will concentrate on the RX400h portion of our training here).
The RX drive was very different than other training sessions that I have attended in the past. This one was set up in the form of a rally with each team consisting of four to five of us and a RX400h and a RX330. The objective of each rally team was to achive a combined (400h and 330) lowest fuel consumption vs the other teams. The location for this event was Niagra on the Lake, Ontario and the surrouning area. Spot checks were set up along the route to make sure that the trip meters and fuel consumption meters were not reset. (For any Rush fans reading this, one of the points of interest we pasted on the rally was Lakeside Park, which is the inspiration for their 1976 song with that name). Trivia!!!
Results for the two hour plus drive demonstrated a average fuel consumption for the RX330 of 11.5 L/100 kms. and 8.5 L/100 kms for the RX400h. Very impressive!!!
In driving the 400h the first thing noticed is the quietness of the vehicle and the smoothness of its transmission. (The steering is also a little heavier than the RX330). When braking there is a distinctive sound as the generators capture and regenerate power. Almost reminds me of the sound that the Millenium Falcon makes before going into hyperdrive.
As for the power of this vehicle, Lexus Canada set up an acceleration demonstration with professional drivers on a runway at the Niagra Airport.
First up was the RX400h vs a 2005 BMW 4.4L X5. The drivers set up at the opposite end of the runway and on the count of three, accererated full throttle towards us. As the vehicles pasted us they were doing approximately 110 km/hr and the RX400h was approximately 3/4's of a car length ahead of the X5. In watching the race you can see the 400h accelerating further ahead with every shift of the X5's transmission. That CVT really works well and is extremely smooth.
Next up was a race with the same 400h vs a 2005 RX330. (this race was done immediately after the X5 race thus demonstrating no power loss). This time the 400h had a 3 to 4 car length lead when they passed us.
The driver training was great, it really showcased the capabilities of this vehicle.
Congratulations to all of you that have a RX400h on order, you will certainly be very happy with this vehicle. Enjoy!!!!
