odd "creeking" noise when turning???
 

hi everyone. Recently, i've noticed that there's an odd "creeking" kinda noise (like opening an old, wooden door...like in the horror movies (hahah)). what's strange is that i hear it when turning the wheel either right or left...but while the car is moving ONLY.
If the car is stopped and i turn the wheel, it's not present.
I thought maybe the top plates, but i think they would make a more pinging Metal noise, and would be present while car is still.
any ideas? I changed both front anti-sway bars, just a few months back (mevotech supreme's).

Any chance it's somethng with the power steering.

Mine has around250K and I get some creaks as well. I've replaced most, suspension parts, but not sway bar bushings yet.

Chapp... i've changed the power steering pump, the sway bar links, the ps bushings were changed a few years back. All 4 shocks were changed with quickstruts. The rest is pretty much oem..

YEah, I think they're just old and getting creaky.

Update.. so i had a little help today. I was looking behind the front, drivers side wheel, while someone helped to turn the steering wheel back and forth quickly. I could hear this "creeking" noise around the strut spring. I wasn't sure if it was at the top of the spring or the base of it. I believe there is rubber, underneath the spring? I sprayed a few shots of white lithium grease around the base and at top of spring. I turned the wheel back and forth again, but it's still there.
i'm not too sure if it may be the top plate? Wouldn't it have a "metal-grinding" noise?

When removing the spring, changing the strut or doing other work, it needs to sit in a specific notch on the bottom of the strut that the end of the spring sits into, there is a rubber liner thing as well that lays in that valley between the spring and strut. You may want to also consider the shock mount at the top they do wear especially in salted road areas

Leeper, thanks, will look into the rubber piece. As per the too mount, as i said it's not really a metal on metal , scraping or screeching noise. It's as though the spring is rubbing against the rubber. Thanks

Sounds like ball joint or shock mount... try spraying oil on shock mount (top of strut) thatis easy and pretty much free

Leeper... never heard of putting oil on top of the mount. What kind of oil do you use? Where do you put it, and how much to put? Do you put it where the red arrow is? See pic..

Front shock mount has a bearing exactly where your red arrow is perhaps shooting some silicone oil there could help quiet it down if it's worn. If you find that quites it down probably time to replace it. Judging by how rusted it looks I'd venture to say it's likely shot... you live in a salted road region? Silicone spray also helps keep rubber bits lubed and protected

Leeper.. yes we have salted roads in winter. I have a can of white, lithium grease..not sure if it's too thick to put in there...any other options? Would wd40 be good? Just spray liberally in there?

WD-40 isn't an oil don't use that. Lithium grease is wonderful for greasing items but not good for lubricating them. Most any spray oil may help silicone spray oil being the best choice... even dripping some motor oil could help

Salted roads is nasty, mean stuff does lots of damage

Leeper... first off i wanted to say thanks. I had sprayed the white lithium grease on the one side, upper mount that was making noise. I went for a super-tiny drive and seemed quiet. I then sprayed more on the same area and i also did the right, front mount too and let everything sit for a few hours.
i just got back from a short drive and all is super quiet and smooth again! I think the rubber part had just gotten a tad dry and was cusing some friction (rubber-bounce), and needed a lube?
should i just keep the white grease i put, or wipe it off and spray with silicon oil spray? Here's a pic of what i have. I also have (in liquid form) wd-40 bicycle chain oil (not in the pic though).

Awesome glad to hear! Of those choices I'd go with the silicone spray it's best for rubber. This is so likely a temporary fix as the problem is still likely the bearing in the shock mount itself.

WD-40 was designed for NASA as "water displacement" not as a lube. Chain lube is usually good stuff, white lithium grease would be awesome if you were repacking the bearing but this is not disassembling anything just shooting it from outside go with silicone then think about replacing the bearing when you can.

Leeper.. so you're saying to use the motomaster one? I used the blue "3 in 1" can.
I guess i should wipe off the stuff i put on, before applying the new one?

i also forgot to mention, the struts are not the original ones...i had swapped all 4 corners a few years ago with FCS quick struts.
