Default 4×4 to Front Wheel drive

Hi guys, so I'm wondering if it's advisable to convert my RX300 2000, 4×4 to a front wheel drive... I keep experiencing problem with the front differential after changing it twice within 6months...

Let me know your thoughts

Hello,

How did the issue first start?
What kind of oil did you use after the repair?
What parts did you replace along with differential?

This car has base FWD, the differential for the front wheels is placed inside the transmission housing, CV shafts come straight out of it, and to access it, the entire transmission will have to come out. What is the problem in particular that you have issues with?

If there is something in the car tearing the differentials apart in less than a year, then there are deeper problems in a car that you will not be able to sort out by simply removing the rear wheel drive, you will have to look for the cause of the issue regardless.

Please elaborate on the issue you have, so it will be easier to find a solution.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Thanks buddy.
I started to observe that whenever I engage the reverse gear, the car sometimes acts up like it's on neutral even if the you can clearly see the indicator light on R on the dashboard and sometimes it reverses without any huddles... I had the transmission rebuilt but this didn't totally fix the issue, it was noticeably better. There was this day I tried to make a reverse at a higher ground just a few cm high, I'm guessing the force produced by the differential was impeded by the transfer case and this caused the differential to shatter so I had changed the differential.
I used a manual gear oil for the differential.

I must have made an error of not having both the transfer case and the rear axle checked before replacing the differential and as a result I experienced similar issue two months after changing the differential... Right now, my differential is toast, so I'll be investigating everything connected to the transmission... I just hope this fixes it all...

Is there a way to check for a bad transfer case and rear axle?

The display is from PRND switch on the outside of the transmission. So the indicator only confirms the cable link connection to the transmission from the shift lever.

The actual engagement of the gears is through solenoid controlling fluid passage ways to activation of bands. So there are number of possibilities as to what can go wrong.
There is lot of discussion regarding pulverization of planetary gears [there are more than one set] which breaks the mechanical coupling progressively [as the thing breaks down], but is evident earlier by gray material in the fluid.

There can be issues with the front and back diffs, but most of the problems reported have been with the transmission.

Rear diff: Assuming every thing is ok from engine to the rear drive shaft, the diff should be relatively well understood by mechanics in your region [Lagos?]. Check the condition of the fluid and if needed an expert can look at the gear engagement impression to confirm proper shimming.

Thanks Salim...
This solenoid is within the valve body inside the transmission right?..

Your message is clear enough
