Have some one stand behind the vehicle as the brake is applied. Count number of lamps that light up. Each side has 2 bulbs and the high mounted [center] should all light up. If you have recently replaced any bulb, please make sure that proper wattage [not lumens] bulb are used. There is a current measuring sensor which expects certain current to flow and if the current is less, then the system assumes a bulb has failed. First gen expects filament bulbs, so a LED based bulb will surely trigger failure light.

Lets get past the warning lamp problem first before drilling down the ABS path.
