While we have owned two 2nd gen LS400s during the past several years, we have never had an RX. But my wife is presently interested in 'moving up' from her LS400 to an RX, to more easily accommodate the advent of grandchildren, as well as occasional local travel with our two large dogs.
So I am trying to become somewhat well informed about RXs, in anticipation of that likely future swap.
I have never made car payments, and will not do so with this purchase. Therefore, my budget will be under $8,000, with a preferred target closer to $5,000~.
With that in view, I am seeing a pretty broad spectrum of good looking candidates in both the 1st and 2nd gen RXs. From your experience, other that fairly small trim features and 'newer car' bragging rights, are there any substantial reasons to choose one over the other?
Further, are there 'gotchas' to bear in mind? Any specific frailties to keep a watchful eye out for when shopping? Other than poorer gas mileage, are there reasons to avoid the AWD version? I know that an expensive timing belt change is very likely necessary with any fresh purchase... Any other 'urgent' things to keep in view?
Thanks in advance!

Although I have strong liking for RX, let me assure you it will not be 'moving up' from LS. LS is flagship sedan while the RX is the most sold vehice. Needs and puporse make them non-overlapping vehicles.
Between gen1 and gen2, I like the looks fo gen1 but that is purely personal preference. Gen 2 is more refined and you get more features and cost reduction motives are evident in switches, trim and leather.
Gen1 is now quite a bit old. So I would lean towards Gen2.
Please spend few days going through recent posts. You can quickly see the issues owners talk about.

Thank you Salim,
Yes -- 'moving up' was more a statement of the evolution of personal needs. I do understand what you're saying.
Thanks for your thoughtful response.
