Default IACV question

I have cleaned my IACV as recommended in the Forum. The magnetic "slug" rotates freely about 75 degrees. My question is, is the shaft supposed to spring return at the end of rotation, or does it remain in the position you leave it until magnetically activated? Mine stays in the position I let go of it. Thanks for the help. Drrako 1999 RX300

Are you still having problems after cleaning it up?

As I understand the position is determined by the magnetic field .. no spring return action.

It should definitely spring back quickly and easily with snap. The spring is for fail safe operation in case of electrical failure.

Art .. is that due to magnetic field and not due to spring (mechanical) action? To me the movement seemed like when I payed with magnets. I have cleaned but never took the mechanism apart.

Default Iacv

Hmmm. Seems we have 2 different opinions. Yes, it's quite clean, and rotates freely through the 75 degrees. However, I put everything back together and it still nearly stalls out on a cold startup, then runs and starts fine. My suspicion is, that if the rotating valve is supposed to spring back to a "cold" position for cold startup and isn't doing so, this might explain what's going on - and I would need to replace the IACV. So - springs back, or not?

It springs back, believe it or not. Pretty sure it is spring action but it has been many years since I had one part. Also, there are a couple different designs and maybe one return is magnetic force. If you are interested in looking, there is one very detailed thread on this item over in ToyotaNation. The fast idle opening is controlled by the ECU, not the spring. The spring is only there for fail safe. You can test yours by applying voltage. It should snap open and snap shut. When shut, you will still see a small opening.

I would defer to Art. What I recall is a tendency to come back to a certain location.
Keep in mind that after you clean the IACV, you should disconnect the battery 20 mins or so and then start the vehicle and let it idle for about 15 minutes to re learn.

Thanks much for your time and help. I'll give the car a little more time to start behaving properly before I assume the IACV is flawed.
