Default Engine Flush After VVT Solenoid Replacement

I just switched out both VVT Solenoids on my 1999 Lexus Rx 300 with 255,000 miles. My mechanic just performed an oil change before the VVT code popped up. He had last done an oil change last August and I've had 2 or 3 oil changes since then. He said that the oil filter that he used back in August was still on the car. He says that the filter isn't very easy to get to so they more than likely just left the old one. I'm pretty sure this was the cause of my VVT Solenoids to go bad. I wasn't able to get the VVT Filter out to clean it. I was going to have my mechanic get it out and clean it for me. I was also told that I should have my engine flushed and an oil change performed as well. I was reading online and I've read several articles that say that an Engine Flush is not necessary and can cause more damage to the engine. Is this true or should I go ahead with the engine flush when getting my oil changed?

I've been curious about the wisdom of an engine flush, also. I've done regular oil/filter changes, but I wonder about a possible sludge problem.

You will find opinion which are generally well intentioned and based on personal experience. Wisdom ... is like carbon, diamonds to some and coal to others.

Here I will add one:
I stay away from additives and flushes. I believe in doing the right (follow the manufacturer's) recommendation [since they have done the most extensive testing] and use quality products. If the history is unknown I suggest getting back to the recommended service.
Any thing abnormal shocks the system. In an aggressive treatment, you dislodge things which may travel.

I have been extremely happy with European Formula Castoroil. There are other quality oils too.
