Help, axle popped out
I was replacing my struts with Fcs quick struts and the driver's side axle popped out of the transmission. I managed to shove it back in and continued working. Am I going to be ok? Or was there a circlip or snap ring that was holding it in?
I don't want to move the car until I find out. It seemed to come out pretty easy.
Thanks David in NY.

Well, if it clipped in place and you heard CLICK and it's not leaking ATF - you should be OK. How in the world did you manage to dislodge axle when removing strut? Axle can come out only when hub is moved and there is no need to move it replacing strut.

Hi, thanks for answering, I had the old strut out and the board I had propping up the wheel hub by the lugs slipped when I was trying to get the new strut into the top mount holes.
Without the board the weight of the wheel hub with rotor caused it to swing outward and down and I saw atf on the garage floor and freaked out. That's why I said that it came out
easily. I was really surprised.
Thanks and Have a Wonderful New Year!!!

Service manual suggests that the circle needs toe replaced and I would have also replaced the oil seal. Hope you dont see leaks.
Good luck figuring out how much trans fluid to put back in. I was never able to read the dip-stick.

I don't know if I can settle you but I think my axle is loose in the transmission too. I think a bad bushing on the control arm, allowing too much movement, unclipped the axle. I guess it could be just slidi g in and out of ripped boot but it looks to me like the axle is slipping too.
today I replaced the control arm and "repaired" the boot and all is well....

Thanks guys, I didn't want to move the car, thinking some clip or ring came off and is inside the tranny. I feel better now, knowing it's a push in click fit.
I bought this car new and this forum has helped me sooo much thru the years.
Wishing everyone the BEST YEAR EVER in 2018...david.

When being pulled straight out they can pop out surprising easy. However when being pried out and forced by say a prybar, they bind. But if two prybars are placed 180° apart and pressure applied at the same time, they pop right out.
What matters is if the axle either A, gouged the seal or B, hit it in a manor so as to knock the tensioning spring free.
Did you notice how far it was out? Could you see the splines?
As for them being "loose" and moving a lot. That is normal. Torn or damaged inner boot is not normal tho.

Thanks for answering,
It pulled out totally from the gearbox. I could see the splines and didn't know to look for a spring clip on the end and just wanted to stop the aft from emptying out and managed to shove it back in as quickly as possible.
I'm hoping for the best....
