So kids lie. Ive replaced my front axles and they have no way to just "pop out".

now if he hit a curb he may have broken tne ball joint which would allow the cv to separate. Grampa, if you never replaced your ball joints in 280,000 miles, it may well have been a rolling time bomb. They are wearing parts and should be replaced periodically. Something like a cutb would break a ball joint if its weak and old. Generally the rx300 has a fail safe LBJ meaning they dont separate but grind into itself. But a smack can break it.

if he gets away with a slap on the hand the lesson will not be learned. Sorry but thats how kids are.

My departing remark is this.

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED.

It is now clear that the story of cv joints being the root cause is not from the grandson.

how so? The story of bumping the curbs was a lie. The skid marks on the curb were long. If he was paying attention as he should have been, he wouldnt have been anywhere near the curb in the first place.

"All 3 mechanics said he absolutely had to hit the curb first and it was impossible for the cv joint to just fall out of this Lexus. My husband drove it an hour before we gave it to him and it wasn't making any noise."

you know its a lie when the story morphs as evidence starts to contradict the first claim. If he has a drug habit or friends that are questionable, you are doing him or the rest of a favor putting him on the road.

if it were me, I'd sell the rx to the mechanic and set the cash aside to be put towards another car. If he has to earn the rest of the money, he will take better care. Nobody ever takes the same care with something given for free as they would have had they paid for it themselves. That is a truism.

Post #15 (few days after) clarifies lots of things.

We have all gotten enough out of this thread and the OP's enquiry is well answered.

I am going to follow the statement in post #16 ... "departing remark" ... and closing this thread.
