Default HID Headlight Lens Broken

I have a 2002 RX300 with factory HID headlight assemblies and a broken lens on one side with packing tape keeping it water tight for now. The other side is slightly cloudy. I can buy one used HID assembly to replace the broken lens/assembly for between $250-$350 and be done with it but am wondering if I can put in a halogen assembly then add a HID retrofit kit. If so, I would end up w/2 new assemblies for about the same price as one used assembly. So essentially I would be downgrading to halogen then upgrading to HID with the retrofit kit. I'm reading on line that the halogen assembly will not fit the HID assembly (I assume either the opening or more likely the wiring). One would think that the headlight assembly openings are the same (halogen or HID equipped). I don't want to splice into the wiring harness and am hoping I could just plug and play. If anyone can shed some light on this topic it would be much appreciated.

Welcome to CL.

Your factory hid has self leveling motors, hid-bulb and ballast and the lens.

Retrofit kits come with a bulb and ballast and wiring adapter. You stick the bulb in the non-hid lens and wire up to the ballast and the wiring adapter connects the ballast to the old harness.

Keep the above in mind as you make plans. I would simply purchase a new/used HID lens and replace the broken one. I would also try to seal the other one.

I would not suggest using an aftermarket HID kit on a new set of Halogen headlamps. They only have a reflector setup made for Halogen bulbs, you will blind others and throw light in random places if you install an HID bulb into a headlamp made for halogen bulbs.

You could get a new set of Halogen headlamps, and do a proper retrofit. Which would entail opening up the new headlamp and installing projectors. Then it would be safe to use an aftermarket HID kit on those headlamps.

The 2002 RX300 I have does not have self leveling lights.

As far as I know none of the retrofit kits for any make/model vehicles comes with reflectors and I doubt most people send their lights out to have the reflectors retrofitted.
