So I drained transmission pan along with front differential. Got approximately 4 quarts. Maybe a little more because I spilled it while trying to pour back into .960 l containers.
Anyhow I refilled 4 quarts and got in between cross hatches when cold. Drove the vehicle approximately 10 miles to check hot and it was down at the cold mark. I've added another .500 l and will check again after driving. Anyone else have this situation?
My transmission was partially rebuilt 30k ago and have been meaning to do a transmission service.
Color was a darkish red extremely murky. Did not smell but didn't look clean. Looks like clutch materials in bottom of drain. Tranny pan bolt had a very gooey quarter sized ball of goo on the end. Differential pan had a small quarter sized amount of metal particles on the end. No metal shavings in the bottom.
Noticed smoother shift afterwards. No delayed shift like I've felt prior to drain and fill. I bought 12 quarts and plan on doing 3 drain and fills with the 3rd one including a dropping of pan and replacing the tran filter and gasket.
I just went ahead and bought the toyota T-IV, I figured that it must be decent enough and I don't know what they previously put in the transmission.
Yes i hope the next drain and fill is clearer. What is that material clutch material?
toyota T-IV is fine. If you still have your drain pan available, see if any of the particles are ferrous by putting a magnet up to it. Hopefully nothing will stick and i would conclude it is burnt fluid/sludge being flushed out.
fastnoypi, How about the fluid level on the hot stick, I'm going to recheck but have you had any difficulties getting readings depending on the hot and cold?
My readings at cold were dead on but than after driving it didn't register in the hot mark. I added an additional .500 l to the transmission and going to drive again and check.

Thanks,

My response got deleted during the thread merge it seems. I would not dwell too much on the hot readings but make sure the levels are consistent when cold, so you know you are at the specified capacity. When you were checking the hot level, were you up to full operational temperature? Transmission fluid temperature will be regulated with the coolant system.
I would consider changing the trans filter to avoid any residual sludge being picked up. It's tedious but an easy job.
