NV011-98 AUG 98 Exhaust - Idle Booming/Vibration Field Fix
Hello, it is probably about 11 years too late for me to take care of this under warranty, but it looks like something I can do myself given that 4WD cars have more ground clearance and are easier to crawl under.
It looks like vibration is an issue with 1999 cars. Mine is a 2000 but it has this problem. Any insights into this issue. Obviously lived with it for 15 years, but it is not Lexus like.
Anyway, does adding the damper to the exhaust work in terms of reducing the booming and vibration in the rear hatch area during idle? I thought there was no fix to this and told to live with it, but what doesn't the all seeing internet know these days?
If anyone has done this themselves, are the parts still available? Any pointers? How about doing something cheap like putting double sided foam tape on the backside of the license plate holder? Or is the vibration in the metal panels of the car itself?
Do you need to replace Pipe assembly, exhaust, center as well to install the damper???? Does it need to be removed to install damper?
damper, exhaust pipe
17581-46060
pipe assembly, exhaust, center
17420-20130
I am personally trying to hit all the niggling problems so I can get top dollar when we finally decide to replace the RX. I can't believe the car is still under 80K miles after 15 years. We almost had to "throw away" the car when we could not get the front O2 sensor out. Had to replace the manifold. Just hoping the second O2 sensor will cooperate when it goes.
Thanks
Louis

First narrow down the source. Pursuing any remedy on the net is a shot gun approach.
Idle rattle problems are much easier to trace.
Ask a helper to touch and hold the license plate (or take it off ... dont drive on street).
With proper protection, touch and hold various segments of exhaust.
Check your engine idle rpm.
The only noise issue with rx was due to the spoiler/deflector. Booming is due to physics and mostly all vehicles exhibit it and has a very simple cure ... crack open another window, when you have the rear lowered while driving.
