Default Transmission clunks

I have 99' RX300 (43 K miles) that everytime I shift from a gear from drive to reverse without stopping in neutral for a second or two, it clunks. However, going either from park to reverse or drive, it doesn't clunk. It only does that when the gear is shifted from drive to reverse.

Dealer thinks it's normal; however, they did say that it clunks slightly more than others.

My point to them was I owned the car since new, and it never did that before. They are clueless as far as what to do aboit it. Any advise or ideas as to this is normal or not ??

Thanks !

Default I assume...

....you are shifting at idle with your foot on the brake (car not in motion).

If so, seems like a problem may be developing. I would start with simple things like CV joints. Especially look for ripped rubber boots covering the joints on each end of each shaft. This is a sign that dirt may have gotten in and accelerated wear of the joint - which would at some point, make it clunk, first, at changing from fwd to rev or rev to fwd and later when driving (first, driving at one particular speed more than other speeds).

There are 4 shafts on the AWD and 2 on the FWD, each shaft has 2 joints. On the AWD, you will need to check the drive shaft also.
