Engine Mounts - How much movement is normal?
Hello all,
How much movement would you consider normal when testing for worn engine mounts?
I revved the RX up to ~1500 rpm in reverse with the brakes on, and in drive up to ~1500 rpm with the brakes on. As can be seen by the video:
Is that much movement normal? I've only ever seen this test done on broken motor mounts so the result is obvious, in this situation however I am unsure whether they need to be replaced or not. I have no symptoms of any problems.
I was just doing my regular in-depth inspection of the car as I do every couple of months and thought to check the engine mounts for wear as I am at 201k miles. Visually the dog bone mount look's fine, no cracking. Can't really inspect the rest of the mounts.

Mounts are by construction ... outer metal and inner metal with rubber connecting the two metals. The outer metal is bolted on to one and the inner is bolted to the other [one -> body, other -> engine].
When the mounting goes bad, it is a break in the metal to rubber connection of a tear in the rubber.
To check, you do a visual and then with pry bars apply torque to see if the bond between the rubber and the metal has been broken.

Just by looking at the video, I would say that this seems normal considering, my '01 RX has about the same movement when I was checking for something else entirely...Not bad!
Yours seemed very strong and when motor mounts go bad, there is also a noise/click/clunk sound associated with it.

Glad to hear this looks normal!
I was thinking the same thing, but wanted some reassurance. Look's like I got it!
I don't hear any clunks or any funky noise.
