I put a K&N airfilter in my '99 RX300 and it was fine for a few months, but I had to put it in the dealer because the engine light came on. It cost me just under $100 for them to clean/replace my MAF sensor. Guess I'll stick to the stock filter for now. I noticed only a minimial change in response and no diff in fuel efficiency running 93 octane.

Speaking of MAF sensor, what do you have to do wrong to screw it up?????????

 

I've used one on my RX for 10 months.

No problems. Don't forsee any, either.

 

I have had now problems with mine either. Also the TRD and K&N look the same.

 

I have run K&Ns on cars,4x4s and motorcycles for years with no problems what so ever. The only way I can think of to possibly ruin a mass airflow sensor would be to overload it with filter oil or spraying the oil on the filter when the engine is running. If you follow the instructions that come with the servicing kit you will be fine and it will last for the life of your car.

 

Did anyone notice any change in engine noise? I had a K&N many years ago and I noticed that I could hear the intake noise much more. Hissing as air went into the carburetor was much more noticeable. Great if you were young and were driving a clapped out econobox. But not desireable in a Lexus. Let me know if you heard more noise with your K&N. Thanks.

 

My post regarding first impressions of the k&N included this line:

"I thought I heard a bare increase in engine noise, (more throaty than anything else) but no complaints there."

I've driven a few RX loaners since I installed the K&N. The noise difference is negligible to the point of
being non-existent. Performance-wise, all those RX loaners I drove were dogs compared to mine.
Sluggish and slow...but that may have to do with the ECU.

 

As Daddy-O stated, intake roar from a drop in K&N (using the original air box) usually will not be noticeable as the stock box will muffle the sound. An open element such as one used on an old 4barrel carb will deffinatly "ROAR" when you punch it. You will be happy with the drop in type from a performance as well as a sound standpoint, especially if you can compare it with the stock setup like with a loaner.

The dealer said my MAF was coated in oil from the filter. It took 2 trips to clean it all up. They cleaned it and later that day the engine light went back on.
