I have heard that a K&N Air High Flow Filter can really improve the performance of 2001 RX300. I would appreciate your opinion. I put regular gas, usually Shell brand.

The RX may be a different story, but K&N filters have been tested to lose horsepower and torque on the LS/SC V8's.

The only real way to see is by having the car dyno tested with the stock vs. the K&N. Not sure if anyone here has ever done a dyno test on the RX.

Try the search function, maybe some previous threads have more info.

 

It does make a difference. I used the Toyota filter for about 2 months, when I first got to Mexico City, and it was dirt black, and performance suffered heavily. I have used the same K&N filter for the last 10 months, with periodic cleaning, and much faster acceleration, more MPG. Incidentally, I have to by law, use 93 Octane Pemex, but it has not hurt the car. I like Chevron with Techron in the States.

 

I bought a K&N for my 99 RX300 and immediately noticed the lack of that dreaded lag when downshifting. Use to have to punch it more than I wanted to effect the downshift. Now it happens much easier. Improves driveability, in my opinion.

 

I've found a modest, almost negigible, performance difference.
Barely noticeable...Very subtle, but still an improvement.

I have, however, experienced an 8% increase in gas mileage.

I highly recommend installing one immediately.

 

I got the TRD high flow air filter in and it does improve the gas mileage. For the performance, don't really feel any but gas saving is good enough...

 

Just be careful when oiling those filters. If you over oil them, they'll mess up your maf.

 

I cant say much about the performance -atleast it hasnt changed for the worse. I think the gas mileage has improve 5-10% but not sure about this either because our office moved so my daily driving profile has changed.

If possible use Chevron with Techron (I use regular) all the time. Ive heard a lot about their additives

 

From your other thread, perhaps you're mixing up drop in filters with a replacement INTAKE (like you tried on your LS).

 

Where can i find a trd filter for the rx? And how much more or less is it than a K&N?

 

Noticed a TRD (K&N type) filter at the local Toyota dealera the other day. Sorry I didn't ask price, sort of recall seeing $40 on it. Also, the K&N is $40 at Jegs.

 

I have had K&N on Harley plus four other family car vehicles for years. I actually was NOT going to put one on my wife's new 2003 RX because I assumed it would translate into some intake tract noise, and **** her off, as I bought car as her car. But each car model is different.

When you hit the gas petal, is there a discernable difference in noise with the K&N on the RX?

 

Only if you punch it, and then not great. Nothing like a wide open 4 barrel!

 

So, are the K&N and TRD filters the same item? (I was surprised to find the local Toyota dealer isn't authorized to sell TRD parts - closest TRD dealer is 200 miles away!!!)

And is this stricly a drop-in change? i.e,. i remove the stock filter & insert the TRD/K&N?

ChuckieB, drop it in and go. Save your OEM filter in the K&N Box. If you clean your K&N, you'll have the OEM as a spare to use.
