Default Brake Fluid Change Interval

Car: 2001 RX300
Miles driven per year: About 5K
Question: When should I change my brake fluid?

Does anyone have recommendations when I should change my brake fluid if I only drive about 5000 miles per year and the owners manual says to change brake fluid every 30K miles?
If I go by the owners manual, it would take me 5 or 6 years.

Thanks.

Brake fluid should be changed every 2yrs independent of milage.

If you dont use your vehicle, it is more important that you purge and refill

Also try using a fresh can of brake fluid. Half full/empty bottles tend to pick up moisture.

I've read some people use colored fluid to make sure they get all the old fluid out. Does anyone know where to get it?

Default Colored Brake Fluid

I have used ATE brand. It comes in both clear and blue. I have gotten it mail-order, but performance auto stores may carry it.

You need to investigate what is the fluid ... most likely it is water ... from rain or ac-condensate. Both have been discussed and search can find those threads for you.

You should also check fluid levels (weekly if not monthly) and a drop in any would indicate a leak.

I think your problem has nothing to do with the brake.
