Default Gates identifies the RX300 as a free-running or non-interference engine application

I don't claim to be an expert but according to Gates, the largest manufacturer of timing belts, the 1st generation RX300's are classified as Free-Running or Non-interference engines.

There are other Lexus models, such as the V-8 4.0 L GS400; LS400; SC400, that are interference engines.

Here's a link to a helpful replacement guide published by Gates: http://www.gates.com/common/download...ementGuide.pdf

I had also been told by my Lexus dealer that the RX300 is non-interference. I've attached a screen shot from the Gates guide.

Perhaps your posts refer to other Lexus models rather than the RX?

SC400 (at least '95 and before), which share the engine of LS400 of that era are non-vvt and are non- interfering. GS400 is vvvt and is interference type [here we agree].

Retractions have been published for RX.

Maybe a certified Lexus tech can weigh in on this. I dont claim to be an expert. [My advice is worth the money I get for my posts]

I would not use or recommend Gates T-belt. OEM come pre-marked for easy install.

+1, the VVT(-I) engines are interference.

Salim,

I agree. I'd love to have a certified Lexus tech weigh in on this important topic so that we all know for sure.

Thanks,

This poor horse has been beaten to death for years. I don't even think certified mechanics all agree on the issue as it depends where the VVT has the valves when the belt goes. It MAY be non-interference under some circumstances and interference under others. IF Gates got the info from Toyota, and it is INCORRECT, it wouldn't be the 1st time Toyota suplied incorrect info in their official shop manual.

Called lexus

the confirmed VVTI (interference)

They said you should be able to see VVTI on engine if it is indeed interference or not.
