Default Front Hub Assemblies

Hi all,

My boss drives a 1999 RX 300 FWD and his front wheel bearings are shot. From what I've read, I need a press to change the bearing (which I don't have.) I was wondering if it would be possible to change the entire hub assembly without a press. I don't have a whole lot of experience with the RX, so I'm a little limited. (I was hoping it would be like my Xterra, which is EASY to change out the bearings, but I wasn't so lucky).

Thanks Guys,
Mike

I believe hub and bearing comes separately . You could done this any auto shop paying little money for both press together .

Moog sells it as a repair kit part # 518509 not sure what that means though? I think it stll has to be pressed in.

I have done it, you have to remove the entire hub assembly from the car. The bearing has to be pressed in and out. I would take it to a machine shop and have them do it, They can charge you anywhere from $25 per hub to do this. The bearing can be ruined if not pressed in correctly, I did it myself, with a 12 ton press, but it was kind of scarey the first time because it doesnt come out easily.....And you have to be care about where you press on the bearing surface so as not to ruin it. The rear wheels come as a bearing hub assembly....I believe the fronts can too, but they charge you accordingly....

Ok, That's what I was figuring based on my reading. I will find a shop near me that will press them in for me, and I'll just take the whole assembly to them and let them do the work for me. I just wanted to ask and make sure before I started tearing it apart.

Based on the tutorial I found here, I will need 2 of each of the following....Does that sound right?

1) Hole Snap Ring (Front Axle) - 90521-82001
2) Oil Seal (Front Axle) - 90311-50008
3) Nut (Locking nut) - 90179-24005
4) Grease Cap (front Axle Hub) - 43514-24010

I am unaware of that snap ring, the oil seal is nothing more than a steel ring that is pressed into place, Axle nut yup. I dont see where you need a grease cap....but maybe on FWD it has one, AWD didnt.....

Thomas,

Thanks Man! That's an awesome write-up, and reading that one made me realize I was looking at a write-up for a rwd vehicle (which is partly why I was so damn confused about the grease cap). I'm going to order the repair "kit" as carguy mentioned, and take them to a shop to be pressed. I'm guessing the hubs themselves are shot because my boss is telling me it has been making this noise for a VERY long time.

Thanks again everyone for the help. I really appreciate it.

Mike

I have not read the writeup, but remember to mark the shafts and the couplings and ensure that you re-assemble the same way. Little things can be very annoying later,

Oh did I mention the two things one should never do

1. Mess with some one else's car. {and you are trying to fix your boss's car!)
2. Mess with ...............................

The front hub assembly will come off the drive shaft, be very careful to support the drive shaft after removing the hub, other wise the drive shaft constant velocity joints can seperate...Put a box or something on it to keep it from extending. support with string, wire, etc. The hub has to be detached from the strut, and the ball joint. take your time and be sure to support the car on jack stands....
