I had my emissions inspection 2 days ago and CEL comes on a day later with P0446 code. I wonder if it's just a coincidence. I cleared the code and tightened the fuel tank cap. Let's see if it returns.

Common Problems That Trigger the P0446 Code

  • Missing fuel cap
  • Defective Evaporative Vent Valve
  • Defective or damaged fuel cap
  • Distorted, damaged or cracked Fuel Tank Filler Neck
  • Torn or punctured Evaporative system hose(s)
  • Defective Fuel Tank Sending Unit gasket or seal
  • Split or damaged Carbon Canister
  • Defective or damaged fuel tank

I would try a new gas cap first, of course

Can you please expand on "got the vehicle inspected".

Proper inspection requires all channels to be ready ... meaning enough drive cycles. Seller can reset the present code and sell the vehicle with the fault, but the CEL not lit. A good inspector will find all these conditions.

A reseller [not private party] can not sell a vehicle in a condition where there is an emission failure. Based on where you are, you may have some recourse.

I would suggest ask the seller to get the problem resolved. Don't get into throwing parts. Get it smoke tested and fixed. Why? Emission leak problems are very pesky problems and may require lowering the fuel tank. Some of the failing parts can also be expensive.
