Default key problem

I have a 2001 Rx,recently while I was shopping the door opening buttons fell out of the key fob; I could open the door with the key but it would not start the car ,why? other postings point out that the chip that for ignition is buried in metal part of the key not the buttons that open the door. any ideas on this?

Wrong info. The electronic module has the magnetic sender at the bottom (it does not draw power from the battery though)
