Question Subwoofer install....

Okay here is my plan. Take the leads to the factory sub and send them through a crossover, then to amp and on to a sub. I figure the wires leading to the factory sub are the same as pre-amps on a aftermarket CD receiver....right?
Seems so simple except there are four wires and I dont know what they go to...Im guess one is ground, one is power, one is the right (or positive) signal lead and the last is left (or negative) signal lead. Cam anyone tell me what wire goes to what? And if my brilliant plan will work or not. I know some of you have the wiring diagrams so maybe that will tell.....Here is a pic of where the factory sub is connected (under passenger seat)

OK HERES THE DEAL. DEPENDING ON WHAT YEAR UR RX IS, THE FOUR WIRES WILL BE SLIGHLTY DIFFERENT, HERE ME OUT. MY FIRST RX WAS A 99 WITH NAKAMICHI. AND THERE WERE 4 WIRES, BUT ONLY TWO WERE CONNECTED TO THE SUB (I TOOK THE STOCK BLACK SUB ENCLOSURE APART) AND FOUND OUT IT WAS A SINGLE 2OHM VOICE COIL. AND IT WAS A SEALED ENCLOSURE. SO YES IT HAD 4 WIRES ON THE CONNECTOR AND EVEN A BASS CHAMBER FOR THE BASS TO BE VENTED, BUT WHEN IT GOT TO THE SIDE OF THE PLASTIC ENCLOSURE, THERE WAS A THIN PLASTIC PIECE SEALING IT OFF. WELL ANYWAY THATS THAT.
NOW I HAVE A 2002 RX WITH NAVIGATION AND THE FOUR WIRES ARE STILL THERE. SO I OPENED IT UP AGAIN AND FOUND THIS TIME FOR ALL 4 WIRES TO BE CONNECTED TO THE SUB. SO IT WAS A DUAL 2OHM VOICE COIL, RUNNING AT 1 OHM MONO. AND NOW THE BLACK PLASTIC ENCLOSURE IS VENTED. HOPE THIS HELPS,

Jonnystan, send me downsized pic you want in your first post (morris_n@acadmn.mercer.edu) and I will replace it for you.

The stereo you have in your RX is what Lexus calls their "Premium Sound System" not the Nakamichi. There is little diffrence in sound b/t the Premium and optinal Nakamichi and the only visible difference is the badging lies to the left of the word "Lexus" on the head unit.

yea it looks like urs is the premium version. but that doesnt make a difference for what you want to do. the high low level converter, converts the already stock amplified signals to preouts for your new "sub amp" so after you connect the converter you can run rca's to your amp. OR dependin on what amp you get, they could already have a high low level converter built in.

the only differences in the nakamichi system and the premium system is :

nak speakers
nak higher power amp
cd changer has a single wire that runs to the nak amp (same hook ups as the premium except it has one extra wire hook-up)

Default Current Pioneer (stock system)

For Model years 2001 and newer, are there any differences in tonal quality when compared to the Nakamichi? Last but not least, did they discontinue the Nak. sys. on the RX at the same time as the rest of the model line?

I remember when I bought my '00 RX back in August of 2000 it was difficult to find an RX with Nakamichi. The dealers would just order the Premium Sound system (240 watt).

I'm not sure if for 2001+ the system has been discontinued altogether.

Thanks for replying LexRx! Yes, for 2001 the Nak System wasn't even an option. I'm just wondering if Lexus had identified another supplier for their high end audio systems - Mark Levinson - and decided not use Nakamichi anymore. Also, if memory serves in looking at the previous years wattage specs - the stock system had 220wattts, whereas the Nak. had 240. I never really heard the Nak. system to get an idea of how it matches up. I know before I had the sub installed, the stock system was barely cutting it. Primarily, It had to do with the bass response, as the stock sub was simply in over it's head (or woofer). I'm currently looking to upgrade the high's and mid's, I think that will finally satisfy me for now.

The shop who installed my sub said that the Levinson system wasn't all that either. They deal with all highline automobiles-Ferrari,Porsche and the like. Like someone else on this board said for relatively little money with the right equipment & installation you can blow the optional ("Premium" or "Audiophile") systems the manufacturers offer into the weeds.

haha aftermarket sound is always going to be better then stock... even if its mark levinson or whatever... i think haha

but ya, when i got my silversport there was no option for nak... nor was there an option for mark. As of right now is there even a option for Mark? I dont seem to see it.

Mark Levinson isn't an option on the RX yet. I think it's safe to say that it will be an option on the next generation RX.
