Default Timing Belt Question

We purchased an 03' with 98k on it and it now has 101k. Not sure if timing belt was changed before we bought or not. If not, I want to take care of it. Lexus dealer says they can do it for $595. Independent mechanic says they would recommend changing the water pump and doing a coolant flush as well at the same time. How come Lexus delarship didn't mention this? Do they wait until car is on lift to mention it? Quote from independent mechanic says he can do all 3 items for $855. Any recommendations/thoughts on the price out there, Thanks!

My mechanic quoted me 1300 for a full 90k service. Belt, water pump, Change fluids in radiator, brakes, power steering, M1 oil change and transmission. Cabin filter and all the rest of it.

I have no idea if that is good, bad or indifferent. I paid 660 for the full 60k service, forgot what all they do, mostly all the fluids I believe.

I had my water pump replaced a few months ago, at around 120k.

They couldn't find the record of the timing belt being changed (I later found out that it had been done). They (Toyota dealership) highly recommended that since we were unsure of the timing belt status, to replace it, since there wouldn't be any significant extra labor involved (which is what replacing the timing belt primarily entails).

That's probably why the independent dealer recommended it.

You may want to try to obtain a CARFAX (or similar) on the vehicle & see where it had some of its maintenance done, and then perhaps that shop can see if the belt and/or water pump had been replaced.

Sign up here for access to Lexus maintenance records. Might get lucky and find that it was already done.

I would love to do it for half of those prices, and still make some good money. And yes, I've done it several times. They are probably fairly normal shop prices, though I have seen shop prices that were a ways below those.
