Anyone experience uncommon noises from behind the center console? It sounds similiar to the CD changer when cycling through the discs after inserting the magazine. I was thinking it may be the vent motors (they are mechanized right), as I tried several different fan speeds, and air distribution points (including defrost) and the noises seemed to subside for a while.
It happens only with the ignition on - the noises can be detected with the radio, AC/Fan off. I was sure that something was going to short itself out yesterday, as the noises got a little erratic.
I think I'll just drop by the dealer in the morning. Please post if you have an idea of what this could be.
The only way I know to turn the fan/blower COMPLETELY off is to turn the entire climate control off in which case I don't think my answer will apply.
There are three servomotors within your climate control system, two of them directly in the center of the console and one off to the passenger side somewhat. If the climate control was by chance just turned on and the fan speed depressed manually then the mixing vane servomotor might have been continuously (inrementally, seconds apart) moving/adjusting the mixing warm/cool airflow ratio as the A/C evaporator temperature declined and the heater core temperature rose. The second servomotor adjusts the air outlet routing and back in 92 modles it was "parked" in the defog/demist position until the engine water jacket temperature rose to 130F and then you could actually hear this motor moving the air routing to the commanded position.
The one off to the side is the fresh/recirc/blend servomoter and it moves the fresh/recirc mix proportionally to some climate control function.
Mr. West I have to give you some credit for your reply. One of the Servo motors was bad, to the point that even with the entire Climate control system completely off, it appeared the motor was running continuously. The service writer was actually quite amused by this. Although, the tech claimed he'd seen a few cars come through with this issue. It's annoying as hell, because it sounds like something is shorting out, to the point where you think you're going to have electrical fire on your hands. Luckily this wasn't the case.
So again thanks, as part of your diagnosis was correct
BTW: They swapped out the defective part on Saturday.
