stupid ran out of gas episode.

How much is left/how far can you go
I did 43 miles (2001 model=19.8gal) before I ran out of gas. Had 3 more friends with me coming back from the mall. The AC was not on. They did curse me for not paying attention- but soon were all praise- I just pulled over to the shoulder and called Lexus. We had some nice music and talk and in 30 min we were back on our way with 2 gallons of gas courtesy Lexus.
By my calculations, the light comes up at 16.5 so I should have 3 more gallons and be able to do 60 miles...but then...
I drive 15 miles to work and I hate to stop when in a rush to fill gas- so I fill gas the first opportunity I have after the light comes up
Not a good idea to drain your tank fully because I read somewhere that modern fuel injectors/pumps are submerged in gas and get lubricated. Low gas means less/no lubircation for those things. I also agree with the debris/particles idea posted above.
FYI- I prefer to fill gas from the same Chevron station all the time.

Sharp,
Despite your use of exclamation points and smilies, your logic doesn't persuade. Everytime you fill your tank aren't you stirring up this "debris and crap"...or what about when you have 3/10 (6 gal.) or 4/10 (8 gal.) of a tank, instead 1/4 tank (5 gal.). It doesn't get stirred up?
With 1/2 tank, when you go around corner, or over a bump or pothole or brake hard or accelerate hard, isn't this "debris and crap" stirred up?
Lets get truly weird and extrapolate: If the tank is not allowed to go below 1/4 full because of "debris and crap that settles at the bottom of the tank over time", then "over time" the tank will eventually be 1/4 full of "debris and crap".
Tank farms have filters. Gas trucks have filters. Even gas pumps have filters.
PS...KIDS today? I got my DL in 1973, back when all was carburated and I was broke. Sheesh, am I in a mood.
GS,
Yes, modern cars have fuel pumps that are submerged inside their gas tanks (in the "debris and crap")...And since the gasoline acts as their lubricant and coolant, you can do damage to the fuel pump if you run the tank dry. But, the manufacturers make sure that even when the gauge reads empty, you still have a little gas left.
I don't believe Lexus is going let you run out of gas and burn out the fuel pump -- especially while the car is covered by their warranty.

My firend owns a shop and you don't know how many times he had to drop tanks and replace fuel pumps because people constantly ran on low gas cause they were just to lazy to stop at a gas station and fill up. Why did he have to change the fuel pump you ask? Cause they sucked all the crap in!! I would rather be late for a meeting cause I stopped to get gas then run the risk of running out on the side of some desolate road. Maybe that's just me!

Okay guys, no use arguing over this. Obvioulsy this isn't going to be resolved here; believe what you want and treat your vehicle accordingly.
There's no reason we can't act civil...if not, I will lock the thread.

The RX forum is a safe haven from the majority of the bickering that can occur on CL. It is minimal, if any, in this forum. We are a mellow friendly bunch...unless provoked *coughSharpLS-96cough*
