Default rx tail light issue

SO i have a 2000 rx 300 awd
The dash light lit up the other day saying i have a light out on the back of my car
Great...
I check and sure enough the very left red tail light is out
there are 4 red tail lights plus the top mounted tail light
so I decide to take a book to hold down the brake to see if they all 4 light up before i buy new bulbs
Sure enough..once the brake is depressed
all 4 light up bright as day
Including the one that doesn't light up when the brake is not held down...
what could be the problem?
I bought 2 new bulbs anyway
but first what else could it be?
if the light bulb was shot wouldn't it not light up at all?
or how does the RX tail light system work
the Left Left red tail light

Also..how in the world do I get to it to replace it?...

Unless I am confusing cars again, you pop off the plastic covers over the screws (that are covered when the hatch is closed). Once the screws are loosened, you just pull the plastic lens assembly back. It is also held in by plastic prongs that just pull loose. It should be obvious from that point.
