UPDATE: it turns out that the bank I first pull out by basin wrench is bank 1. I just pull out the bank 2 by hand, just like what you describe. Thanks for your tip.

Hello, I am new to the lexus rx 300 but i am not a newby at mechanic work. I have had the same code(p1354) and I replaced both OCV valves this morning and now that code is gone and I have two new ones, p0125, and p1133. My rx 300 started with twelve codes at first and i have replaced the thermostat, radiator, and coil packs with new spark plugs as well. I have been going down the list one code at a time. I have also changed the oil and filter and checked to make sure my fans are running good, but the vehicle is still getting hotter than normal. Can anyone help?

Just this morning I had p1354 in addition to random multiple misfires on cylinders 2, 4, and 6.
7 codes total
2 for each cylinder misfiring and 1 for the 1354
Brakes lost their boost and were stiff/weak
When in neutral engine rev'd to 1300rpm
At a stop the engine vibrated like crazy
Lost overdrive and essentially went into limp mode
CEL blinked every now and again but was always on.
I bought a new "left" OCV (oil control valve) and it runs like new again.
If you have these codes and symptoms...replace your OCV and 99% chance you'll have taken care of the problem.

It's also ALWAYS possible to have a defective new thermostat. I've seen it happen more than once in my 15+ years of wrenching.

FYI - I've learned to goto the Toyota Dealer (not the Lexus), tell them I have the 1MZFE engine in my 2000 ES300 and they get me Toyota OEM parts cheaper than the Lexus dealer. On the first few visits to the parts dept, most of the counter guys didn't know what I was on about, but now I've taught them a thing or two and they know which models match and have been able to help others.
It's sad that you have to school a Toyota parts guy on the endless cross references between our Lex's and similar Toyo's.

I had this same issue. Did you replace your air filter? Because the air intake is above 3 of the back 3 spark plugs. When they dont get enough air it throws off the valve timing and causes a laundry list of problems.

2001 Es 300 issues
Hello everyone,
New to the forum and new to repairs here but i recently had a very similar issue as @erics99rx except minus the overdrive issue. I was hoping someone could explain to me where I find the ocv and the ocv filter and how I go about replacing/checking them for damage.

Don't know if it's frowned upon to give details, but I ordered the part from Partsgeek because RockAuto and none of the local guys had one. So you know, they call it a Cam Adjust Solenoid on there, but they mention Lexus calls them OCVs. They also say "left" or "right" for the parts description and not the bank numbers. Bank 1 is the solenoid on the right, and nearest to the firewall. Bank 2 is the left solenoid, and closest to the radiator. It was $63 with free shipping and a genuine Lexus part showed up, not too bad. I saw some other guys paid ~100 at the dealership so I sprung for the cheaper one.
Got the part in today, it took about 10 minutes to pop in there and tighten the retaining bolt. The car immediately ran great, highly recommend this job as a DIY. Thanks again guys for the good info, hope I helped someone too.

P1354, Brakes, No apparent misfire.
Good information here. My '99 RX300 is well, self maintained with frequent and a recent oil change, 19x,000 miles, without apparent sludge. Timing belt was around 130,000. I have not yet removed the oil control valve. The PCV valve was replaced about 10,000 miles ago, but was not sticky. My symptoms that suddenly coincided with the P1354 code are that the engine was a bit sluggish at the time and the brakes needed a bit more effort. The CEL came on and stays on, no blinking. There are no other codes or pending codes, and I haven't had many trouble codes on this car.
Does it seem that it could be something other than the oil control valve? Timing or belt? Could this be a vacuum leak? What should I look for? Which OCV if so?
